Torrontés that takes you to the tropics

Michel Torino Don David Torrontés Reserve (2006)
Origin: Argentina (Cafayate Valley)

Price: $9

OK, so maybe you're not exactly picturing Argentina when I say "tropics," but this torrontés definitely oozes tropical fruit. So vivid. So luscious.

Torrontés is one of my absolute favorite varietals -- the new sauvignon blanc, if you will. The exotic feel hits you all at once, but if you sit back, you can pick out the grapefruit, lime, pear and green apple notes -- all those fruits that are refreshing and clean, but still leave you with a slight pucker. You can smell them even before the first sip, and there's a frangrant floral aspect to this wine as well. What always intrigues me about torrontés is the slight bite on the finish. This one transitions from the juicy fruits to the herbiness of basil and then to a pungent green pepper finale.

Yes, this would make the perfect summer wine and maybe you're thinking that I'm drinking this in the wrong season. But, truthfully, I needed a little break from the reds. You can probably tell that I've been on a pinot noir kick lately. Or maybe I've just missed the summertime? I'd recommend pairing this with grilled seafood, chicken and vegetables. You can't go wrong.
