Sometimes it's OK to impulse buy

Smashed Grapes Merlot (2003)
Origin: California

Price: $6

Just admit it -- sometimes you're guilty of an impulse buy. But who can resist when it's only a $6 purchase? Honestly, I don't even feel bad. The hip logo and colorful packaging tactics made for a no-brainer. And you have to love the fun copy on the back label: "Grapes don't mind being smashed. It's their destiny." Well, I'm a wino, so of course that's true!

The juice itself was not half as magical as the bottle, but also not bad for the price. I tasted notes of plum, raisin and sour cherry that were held together by just enough oak. Much juicier than the average merlot, which is not a bad thing. It tasted pretty silky over all, but also a tad bit tinny, which is to be expected for a cheap red.

I would stock up on this for New Year's Eve or an equivalent gathering. Your guests will never know how little you paid for it. So, yes, I stand by this impulse purchase. They always say that "curiosity killed the cat," but curiosity hasn't killed the wino yet.
