Simple wine for simple food

Luna di Luna Sangiovese Merlot (2004)
Origin: Italy (Umbria)

Price: $10

Some days you might feel like keeping it simple. Some days chocolate pudding seems more appropriate than chocolate soufflé. It's much the same with wine.

This sangiovese merlot blend may not be as rich and complex as many of the dry reds out there -- you might even consider it a bit watery. Nor is it extremely aromatic. But it will make an excellent sidekick to pizza on a Sunday night.

The sangiovese gives it naive fruit while the merlot adds a bit of structure and a velvety texture. The subtle cherry and berry flavors are held together by light oak.

On a different note, this brand truly makes a style statement. Each of Luna di Luna's wines flaunt their own color personalities -- this bottle being a juicy jewel-tone purple. Maybe next time I'll want a fire-engine red bottle, which would be the merlot cabernet blend. Top that with an artsy-contemporary wine label and silver foil and you have something quite eye-catching. It's impossible to miss these in store.
