Zolo Torrontés (2007) Origin: Argentina (Mendoza)
Price: $9
Pardon me if I seem giddy, but this is yet another torrontés that I find positively superb. While this is only the second torrontés that I've ever tasted (don't laugh), I'm simply in love. The new joke is that I'm going on vacation to Argentina so I can get up close and personal with this grape that I adore. Even though I'm still enamored by the Santa Ana Reserve that I mentioned previously, I must give this Zolo mad props.
It has a stunning floral and citrus aroma that makes you feel instantly revived. The taste is full of citrus, apple and pear, but without the sugary sweetness. You can also sense some fresh herb notes and the finish is crisp and clean. Truly delightful.
Oh, and here's a bonus. I had this wine last night at BLUE Bistro & Wine Bar in midtown. It's an interesting little somewhat-Euro-influenced place that changes its menu seasonally. It's not BYOB, but it turns out that Tuesday night features half-price bottles of wine, this Zolo being one of them. That makes it not much more expensive than buying it at the store. Also, make a mental note that BLUE Bistro has half-price tapas during happy hour. Why didn't I know this sooner?!
